Dying to Self

Dying to self means that we STOP demanding the world revolve around us.

Dying to self means that we GIVE UP the right to always be right.

Dying to self means that we TURN THE OTHER CHEEK when someone attacks us and that we do all we can to live in peace, even if it means getting the raw end of the deal.

Dying to self means that all that is in us that isn't holiness and faith has to be DENIED.

~ Hayley DiMarco

I am a Mess...

This is from my devotions this morning:

"But all who are hunting for You - oh, let them sing and be happy. Let those who know what You're all about tell the world You're great and not quitting. And me? I'M A MESS. I'M NOTHING AND HAVE NOTHING: MAKE SOMETHING OF ME. YOU CAN DO IT; YOU'VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES - BUT GOD, DON'T PUT IT OFF."
~ Psalm 40: 16 & 17

Well, I think that about sums it up. Nothing else really needs to be said, I don't think...

Splitting Harriet by Tamara Leigh

Guess what?!? I just finished another book. I feel so accomplished - three in one weekend :P It's just too bad I can't get through Emma - a book that really would make me feel better. Geeeeeeez...

Anyway... Surprisingly enough, the book I just finished reading did have some pretty good insights... So, here goes:

~*~ Have you ever tried counting the stars?... It puts things into perspective. How small we are... how mighty God is... how alone we are without Him...

~*~ It's okay to talk about the past. In fact, it's a good way to learn from it.

~*~ Maybe it isn't bad timing. Maybe it's God's timing, but we don't recognize it because either we're too caught up in the bad choices we made in the past or this isn't the ideal situation we envisioned. But what if the situation is ideal for God?

~*~ We seek to know fully the Lord God Almighty, to experience His incredible goodness and grace and to be totally amazed that He would choose to live within us. Our desire is to know Him so intimately and trust Him so completely that His will for us becomes the dominant desire of our lives. We seek to use the gifts that God has placed within us to serve others, seeking to meet every physical and spiritual need. Therefore, we welcome everyone so that we may point each to Him and to our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, who alone redeems and transforms us into His image.

And, finally, here are the two that meant the most to me:

*~* ACCEPT FORGIVENESS, AND LEAVE THE PAST IN THE PAST.

*~* YOU HAVE TO ALLOW THAT YOU'RE GOING TO STUMBLE LIKE THE REST OF US AND TRUST GOD TO GIVE YOU A HAND UP.

Brokenness

Some notes from my devotions a few months ago:

"Brokenness is where we truly come face to face with God."
"Brokenness is that feeling you get when you tell your pride to shut up and TRUST GOD."
"The woman who cannot die to self can never accomplish what her heart desires."
"When we die to self and our sinful nature... we become alive to God in Christ Jesus."

~ Mean Girls All Grow Up by Hayley DiMarco

*This is just something to think about. It impacted me in a big way. It's something I struggle with every day. And, I think if everyone is being honest - we all struggle with this constantly. It's not an easy concept to grasp really - whether you are a Christian or not. Sometimes, I think it's harder if you are a Christian. But, of course, that's just my own personal view.
Being completely broken before God is not easy. We have to fully let Him take control of every area of our lives. If we can't give up ourselves - I don't see how God can possibly help us.

Thoughts, anyone?

What a Friend...

Here's one of the hymns that we sang in church on Sunday. For the first time (I think), I actually really listened to the words. And, let me tell you, they are beautiful...

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield thee;
thou wilt find a solace there.
